Finally Reddit, one of the largest and most popular at least in the West, received its official app. The wait was increased a few months ago when it was announced the beta, and now is finally available. The app has a streamlined interface and fluid, and in General is very well designed. Understandably, it lacks some of the more advanced features that are used in third-party clients that are likely to remain the number one choice for more advanced users for some time.
In any case, it supports browsing, managing subscriptions to subreddit, research, creation of post (images included) upvote, comments, and much more. You can specify to be of legal age (for the explicit content), blur by default the images tagged as NSFW and send/receive private messages. There is also a night mode/dark theme. And as if that wasn’t enough, as the welcome offer, who will log in later this week will receive three months of Reddit Gold -banner ads-free version of the site.
Unfortunately the app is officially available only in certain markets, English-speaking ones, so we don’t talk about it–at least for the time being. The site managers explained that:
We are available today in USA, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia. Launch app in other countries require a bit more attention than simply provide a website globally, but we strongly want to get anywhere. In the meantime you can continue to use your site optimized for the Web or any of the great third-party clients available.
So it seems that for Android and iOS users we will simply wait a while; for Windows Phone/Mobile, however, prospects appear to be less optimistic. To direct a user’s request if there were plans to develop an app for Redmond, one of the directors of the site responded with a Curt “no”. Fortunately there are many third party apps that do their job more than egregious, such as Baconit or Readit, as electronicsmatter says.
If you’re feeling a bit adventurous and you have Android, however, you can try the app now wherever you are in the world: all you have to do is download the APK and install it manually.Nothing particularly difficult, just that you have the setting “unknown sources” enabled. As you can see from the screenshots, it works perfectly.
